Symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) are nasal blockage, nasal discharge, postnasal drip, facial pain, headache, and reduction or loss of smell, but they are often subtle and make it difficult to obtain a firm diagnosis based only on clinical data, and especially to distinguish CRS from persistent rhinitis. A diagnosis of certainty of CRS relies […]

Case Report
The authors describe the case of a 28-year-old woman, with a history of recurrent bacterial infections since childhood and multiple hospitalizations for pneumonia, with important pulmonary sequelae, including bronchiectasis which warranted the need to perform a left lobectomy and lingulectomia at age 13. After diagnostic work up, the diagnosis of hypogammaglobulinemia with hyper-IgM was established, […]

Childhood asthma presents with specific clinical and functional characteristics. The aim of our study was the description of a large cohort of asthmatic children. It was also to assess their outcome with maintenance therapy according to guidelines, and to analyze the relationship with baseline’s characteristics. We focused particularly on clinical and functional pediatric specificities. Methods: Prospective […]
Background: In multiple NSAID reactors, intolerance to weak COX-1 inhibitors may pose relevant therapeutic problems when painful, febrile or rheumatic disorders co-exist. Objective: To assess whether pre-medication with a second generation antihistamine is able to prevent urticaria induced by “alternative” NSAIDs. Methods: 87 with a history of urticaria following the administration of multiple, chemically unrelated […]
It is well known that patients suffering from bronchial asthma undergoing to surgical procedures requiring general anaesthesia (GA) or the administration of water soluble radiographic contrast media (RCM) experience a risk of potentially severe bronchospasm. Nevertheless, little attention has been devoted on the possible preventive measures to reduce the occurrence of this potentially life- threatening […]
An unusual case of both banana and tomato allergy is reported. In vitro tests showed that both co-sensitization to and co-recognition of allergen in the two fruits were present. Interestingly, the patients showed IgE reactivity to hitherto not described, high molecular weight allergens.
Background: Primary apple allergy is frequent in Mediterranean countries where hypersensitivity to lipid transfer protein (LTP) is common. Due to its stability upon pepsin digestion, LTP may cause systemic allergic reactions. This study investigated the potential risk associated with an isolated intake of apple while fasting in LTP hypersensitive patients with clinical allergy to peach […]
Guidelines recognize the importance of achieving and maintaining asthma control: the treatment strategies now available allow the control of the great majority of patients with asthma but despite many efforts only 5% of patients achieve guideline-defined asthma control. The GAPP (The Global Asthma Physician and Patient survey) is a global quantitative survey with the aim […]
Background: Cross-reactions between venoms may be responsible for multiple diagnostic positivities in hymenoptera allergy. There is limited data on the cross-reactivity between Vespula spp and Vespa crabro, which is an important cause of severe reactions in some parts of Europe. We studied by CAP-inhibition assays and immunoblotting the cross-reactivity between the two venoms. Methods: Sera […]
Increased asthma severity is not only associated with enhanced recurrent hospitalisation and mortality but also with higher social costs. Most cases of asthma are atopic in nature, with the trigger for acute asthma attacks and chronic worsening of inflammation being allergens inducing an immune response through immunoglobulins of IgE class. Currently antiinflammatory treatments are effective […]
